Pu-Erh
Fermented and aged tea with subtle, dark flavors.
What Is Pu-Erh?
Pu-erh is a category of tea traditionally produced in Yunnan, China, and is best known for its ability to develop and transform over time. Unlike most teas, pu-erh is often aged, allowing its flavor to change as the tea matures. Its flavor can range from earthy, woody, and rich to sweet, fruity, and surprisingly smooth.
Pu-erh is generally divided into two main types: raw (sheng) and ripe (shou). Raw pu-erh is naturally aged and gradually develops its flavor over years or even decades. Ripe pu-erh, on the other hand, undergoes a controlled fermentation process that accelerates the aging process, producing a darker, smoother tea much sooner.
Traditionally compressed into cakes, bricks, or other shapes for storage and transport, pu-erh has a long history deeply connected to the tea-trading routes of southwestern China. Today, it remains one of the most fascinating categories of tea to explore, especially for those interested in how tea can change with age.
